THE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND BROADCASTING Housed in the Potter College of Arts & Letters, the School of Journalism & Broadcasting (SJ&B) supports nearly 600 students in four academic programs: Broadcasting, Film, Journalism and Photojournalism. The School was re-accredited in 2016 by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The SJ&B is one of only seven Programs of Distinction in Kentucky. This designation enhances the mission of the School and provides resources for the Center for 21st Century Media. The Center includes the School, the Continuing Media Education Institute and the Kentucky High School Media Institute. WKU consistently places at or near the top of the overall William Randolph Hearst Competition, and has finished first in photojournalism in almost every year of the competition. Twenty-four of the School's alumni and faculty have been part of 16 Pulitzer prizes. SJ&B features a student-run radio station and professional television and photography studios. Students are afforded extracurricular opportunities including our award-winning student newspaper, yearbook, newscast and the Emmy Award-winning public television station and public radio network. The School is also home to a fast-growing film program focused on narrative film-making with full production and post-production facilities. The School is located in Mass Media and Technology Hall, an $18.4 million facility opened in 2003 - where students have access to state-of-the-art facilities including seven multimedia labs, a gallery and a 275-seat auditorium.

Job Description:

Western Kentucky University's nationally-recognized School of Journalism & Broadcasting seeks applicants for the position of School Director. The new Director will have a focus on local, national, and international journalism; support initiatives in the film program; be able to engage an active alumni network; work with faculty, staff and students from a variety of disciplines; and foster multi-disciplinary cooperation. Working with the School's 40-plus faculty, instructors and staff, the Director will provide the visionary leadership to maintain excellence and meet the challenges and opportunities presented by the evolving media landscape. All candidates must demonstrate a vision for the future informed by a belief in the fundamentals of the profession; an understanding of the importance of journalism in the 21st century; and a commitment to the power of storytelling across multiple platforms. The School seeks someone with a record of success in development, strategic partnerships, and industry collaboration.


  • An advanced degree in one of the School's disciplines. 
  • Strong professional and higher education experience.
  • Management experience, including working with large budgets.
  • A record of scholarship or creative work appropriate for tenure and appointment at the rank of full professor.
  • A commitment to increasing diversity within the School and in the profession.
  • A clear vision for promoting the School on a national and international platform.
  • Prior teaching/instruction at the university level.
  • A commitment to developing a graduate program in the School.
