McClatchy is looking for journalists with outstanding digital skills to take on the pivotal role of Audience Editor at several of our newsrooms. The position places laser focus on serving and growing our digital audiences and sits at the heart of the newsroom reinvention initiative that is drawing attention across the country for innovation and impact.
The role calls for a unique combination of talents that blends modern storytelling with audience development. Many of our newsrooms have these editors in place, but we view our ambitious reinvention plans as an opportunity to add a group of select editors who will help lead our newsrooms in the future. The locations with openings range from smaller newsrooms to several metro newsrooms.
The audience editor will have the authority to shape our journalism from conception to publication. This is a senior position in the newsroom with wild-card rights to direct and develop our digital coverage. We are looking for a class of editors with these talents who will help lead our reinvention push and, with success, earn top newsroom jobs in the future.
The Audience Editor will guide reporters, videographers and editors throughout the editorial path, using an understanding of analytics and reader behavior to help determine whether there is an audience for an initial story idea; how we might broaden that audience; what form of storytelling -- text, video, slideshow, podcast, etc. -- would be most likely to succeed in reaching the target audience; how the piece itself should be shaped to reach that audience; how the headline and social media share text should be written; what keywords will maximize search; what distribution platforms to use; whether and how to update posted content to expand readership; and whether and how to “move the story forward” after that.
Candidates should have strong reporting, writing and story shaping skills; the reader-engagement talents of a strong social media editor; the statistical knowledge of an analytics expert; and the coaching skills of a veteran leader.
Specific skills were looking for:
Excellent news judgment, and a demonstrated ability to envision stories that will matter to readers and to anticipate reader interests before they exist.
Proven ability to lead, inspire, and convey knowledge to others, and to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues in managing change.
An interest in and aptitude for storytelling using a broad range of media, including the written word, video, photography, podcasts and other audio, and whatever comes next.
A full understanding of the art and the science of audience engagement.
Skill and versatility as an editor and a writer, including the ability to shape everything from breaking news briefs to long-form magazine-style pieces in a way that best serves and engages the broadest possible audience.
