May 6, 2017

Editor for Spanish-language newspaper

The leading Spanish-language newspaper in Central Washington is looking for a dynamic leader to further the success of our 16,000-circulation weekly publication and its website. El Sol de Yakima’s focus is on local news, features and sports information for Spanish-speaking residents of the Yakima Valley.

El Sol’s editor must be bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English, and possess exceptional journalism skills. He or she must be highly organized and able to juggle multiple tasks, write stories, take photos, edit content provided by freelancers, and work cooperatively with members of the newsroom and other departments at El Sol’s parent newspaper, the 22,000-circulation Yakima Herald-Republic. Both newspapers are part of the family-owned Seattle Times Co.

The editor is also expected to work on multiple platforms to provide content.  We recently redesigned our website, elsoldeyakima.com, making it easier to update.

About our area: Yakima County is diverse, with Hispanics comprising 48 percent of its population. The economy is heavily dependent on agriculture, particularly apples, hops, other signature crops and a growing wine industry that has gained attention worldwide. The Yakima Valley is also immersed in contentious issues involving immigration, politics and natural resources. Our low cost of living, true four-season weather and abundant sunshine make Yakima an ideal place to live. For leisure, Central Washington offers a wealth of outdoor recreation in the Cascade Mountains and the region’s rivers and lakes. Yakima has a small but thriving arts community, and the urban centers of Seattle and Portland, Ore., are just a few hours’ drive from here.

The position begins on June 1. Applicants should submit a formal letter explaining what they have to offer El Sol de Yakima, a résumé, list of references, and samples of stories they have written to Maria Barajas, Human Resources Director, Yakima Herald-Republic, 114 N. Fourth St., P.O. Box 9668, Yakima, WA 98909, or mbarajas@yakimaherald.com.
