Job Description:

YES! Magazine seeks a journalist for a one-year, full-time, in-house reporting fellowship based in our Bainbridge Island, Washington, office. Most editorial staff members commute from Seattle. The fellow will receive a salary of $40,000, plus vacation, commuting, and health benefits. YES! established this fellowship to support journalists from communities of color and to increase the diversity of voices and perspectives in our social justice reporting and writing.

YES! Magazine is an award-winning, national, nonprofit media organization. Our print publication reaches 60,000 people each quarter. Online we reach nearly 1 million readers every month. Our editorial mission is to support social change by investigating solutions that address core problems at the intersections of social, economic, racial, and environmental justice. Our brand of explanatory journalism contains both reporting and analysis.

The fellowship offers the opportunity to work with experienced writers, editors, and designers to bring the YES! perspective to both the news of the day and longer term in-depth reporting. The fellow’s reporting for both print and website will land within any of our major content areas: economic inequality, racial justice, local economy solutions, food and health justice, climate and environmental justice. Ideally we’d expect to see at least one shorter piece (600-1000 words) per week plus one to two more substantial pieces per month. (1500-2500)

The person we’re looking for:

  • You’re experienced. You’ve worked as a reporter before and have lots of clips, but you want to take your journalism further, to learn and improve.

  • You’re an excellent writer with a clear and strong voice.?

  • You’re curious. You love to dive into new ideas.

  • You’re a news hound. You can think of ten ways to contextualize any news story.

  • You have a deep understanding of progressive ideas and social justice solutions.

  • You come from a community underrepresented by traditional media and are able to use that experience to help us achieve greater breadth, depth, and accuracy in our coverage.

  • You’re interested in research and data that reveal important stories.

  • You’re optimistic. You get it that social movements have transformed our societies many times throughout history and are excited about what they’re doing right now. You bring that context to the current events you’re covering.

The deadline for applications is June 1. We’re aiming for a start date in July.
