Civil Rights Reporter

Post Date:Jul 20, 2017Type:Full time
Start Date:ASAPSalary:
Location: United States - Texas - Austin Job Reference:
Job Description:

The Texas Observer seeks a talented civil rights reporter to join our 63-year-old, mission-oriented publication to cover issues of mass incarceration, voting rights, police violence, racial justice and more in the Lone Star State.

The Observer, based in Austin, is an Emmy- and National Magazine Award-winning nonprofit media organization known for its fearless investigative reporting and narrative writing about all things Texan. We are committed to covering issues ignored or underreported by other media.

Job Overview: The Observer is seeking an experienced writer-reporter who has a proven ability to craft powerful stories and commentary. You must be a self-starter capable of carrying out investigations and research, as well as building a piece from conception to publication. You must have a strong command of language and a high degree of comfort in structuring longform stories. This position’s beat is civil rights, which is to be construed broadly but must cover mass incarceration issues and may additionally include voting rights, police brutality, racial disparities in the criminal justice system, LGBTQ rights, etc. Reporting may take you to Dumas or Beaumont, Rio Grande City or Texarkana.

—At least five years reporting experience, though exceptions may be made.

—Familiarity with Texas politics and culture is not required, though native Texans or those who got here as quickly as possible will be given special consideration.

—Excellence in generating story ideas and seeing them through to fruition over the course of days, weeks or months.

—An impeccable eye for detail and accuracy. Enjoying, or at least pretending to enjoy, the editing process is also a plus.

— A deep and abiding commitment to and interest in civil rights.

—An interest in both the big policy issues as well as an ability to present real-life stories about people impacted by these policies.

—Fluency in Spanish is a bonus.

—As with all our positions, we particularly encourage those from communities underrepresented in journalism to apply.

The Texas Observer offers competitive pay and benefits. Candidates should send a cover letter, résumé and three strong clips to jobs AT by May 1.
