The Virginian-Pilot based in Norfolk, Virginia, seeks an Editorial Page Editor who possesses high standards, is eager to foster community dialogue, and is a persuasive writer and effective, fair-minded communicator. This editor will lead an editorial board, write editorials, shape the paper’s Opinion page and interact with readers and newsmakers. The Pilot’s Opinion page is a forum for diverse ideas, and the best candidate will continue to develop that forum in traditional and new media to reach readers and encourage engagement. As the largest daily newspaper in Virginia, our Opinion page plays an important role in taking on local, state and national topics.

The Editorial Page Editor leads a team of one editorial writer and a letters editor. Duties include writing editorial opinions, conducting newsmaker interviews, selecting columns and cartoons for daily use, and interacting with readers. Knowledge of social media platforms, AP style, and journalism degree required. Prior management experience a plus. The Editorial Page Editor serves on the Pilot Media Leadership Team and reports to the Publisher.

Responsibilities:

  • Write daily editorials that contain clear opinion and original reporting; edit syndicated columns, letters to the editor, and design pages- daily and Sunday 
  • Generate content ideas; research and coordinate opinions stories; delegate and oversee writing and editing assignments
  • Oversee scheduling, design daily editorial page as well as Sunday Opinion pages, including page design, proofreading of Editorial Page and letters to the Editor 
  • Oversee PilotOnline.com’s Opinion channel
  • Coordinate freelance writers and syndicated columnists as required 
  • Lead editorial board 
  • Meet with community leaders and opinion makers
  • Lead editorial department staff; discuss news and collaborate on developing editorial lineup
  • Participates regularly in public appearances, radio shows, forums around the issues of the day
  • Meet deadlines

Qualifications:

  • Strong ethics and integrity
  • Record of writing excellence, precision and clarity
  • Demonstrated ability to write colorfully and convincingly. Sample editorials required.
  • Demonstrated ability to write quickly, concisely and authoritatively on a wide variety of topics
  • Demonstrated ability to work on numerous assignments simultaneously and meet deadline
  • Track record of success leading a team in a changing media landscape
  • Record of uncompromising accuracy
  • Committed to forging connection with readers and working collaboratively with members of the company leadership team

Education/Experience:

  • Significant life experience and/or knowledge relevant to Hampton Roads
  • Ten (10) years of daily newspaper experience, including some management experience 
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
