The SPLC is dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry and to seeking justice for the most vulnerable members of our society. Using litigation, education, and other forms of advocacy, the SPLC works toward the day when the ideals of equal justice and equal opportunity will be a reality.
Our lawsuits have toppled institutional racism and stamped out remnants of Jim Crow segregation; destroyed some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups; and protected the civil rights of children, women, the disabled, immigrants and migrant workers, the LGBT community, prisoners, and many others who faced discrimination, abuse or exploitation.

 

Position Overview
The Southern Poverty Law Center is looking for a staff writer to join the organization’s Teaching Tolerance department.
The writer will compose engaging copy for the department’s audience that supports its programmatic goals. The writer will work in a collaborative environment to produce: blogs, reports, web and email copy, feature stories and curriculum materials, both print and electronic. S/he must ensure accuracy, clarity, consistency and overall quality of content while meeting deadlines and balancing daily and longer-term assignments.

Responsibilities:

• Writing original online and print content, including but not limited to: blogs, feature stories, newsletters, emails and reports;

• Writing timely news-related stories to help educators both learn about topical social justice issues and introduce them into the classroom;
• Providing editorial support to other members of the department as needed;
• Staying abreast of TT and SPLC’s programmatic work and contributing editorial ideas to promote it;
• Conducting research and fact-checking as needed;
• Working across the department to bring clear messaging and institutional voice to all written communications;
• Copyediting and proofreading for a variety of publications.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications or English preferred;

• At least three years of professional writing experience, preferably within a news organization and/or nonprofit environment;
• Strong communication skills; ability to write quickly, clearly, accurately and persuasively;
• Proven ability to work independently, meet multiple deadlines and function under pressure;
• Familiarity with and commitment to social justice issues and the Teaching Tolerance mission;
• Team player with entrepreneurial spirit and ability to collaborate effectively with staff members at all levels in fast-paced environment.
• Preference given to writer with background in educational publishing.
