RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Director, Features Content leads the development of feature content for print and digital.  This includes the feature stories for the AARP Bulletin, AARP The Magazine (ATM), feature content for the web with special focus on features related to entertainment, travel, lifestyle including personal style and home, relationships and feature content in the area of health and money.

  • Oversees the work of each content producer (writer-editor-producer) to develop creative substantive feature content able to be visually well-packaged for our 50+ demographic that can be used on appropriate platforms.

  • Leads the team to be engaged and enthusiastic and to demonstrate in their work current best-practices in creating content for print and digital platforms.

  • Needs to hire effectively and monitor the effectiveness of writer-producer-editor staff.

  • Develops an enthusiastic, highly motivated, creative writer-editor-producer features team.

  • Works collaboratively and helps oversee overall content strategy with VP, News & AARP Content, Editor-in-Chief, AARP publications, editor of digital platform, head of AARP Studios, VP Content Strategy and Communications.

  • Oversees quality of feature content and how it is created for each content platform with special awareness of design and online needs.

  • Oversees that content requests are handled appropriately and in a timely manner.

  • Oversees the development of feature ideas and the creation of a feature inventory.

  • Oversees the recruitment of talented feature writers and producers.

  • Works collaboratively with AARP, West Coast Editor, Movies for Grownups Director, Media Relations and Social Media.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism English, communications or related discipline.
  • 10+ years magazine, newspaper, digital experience including 8+ years media management experience.
  • Excellent editorial judgment.
  • Collaborative personality and work style.
